Household towels are one of the most frequently used cotton textiles in daily life, but mold contamination can seriously affect their use and pose a threat to human health. To understand the fungal community composition of household towels, this study utilized high-throughput sequencing to analyze the fungal community composition, structure, and influencing factors on the surface of household towels from seven major regions in China. The results showed that the fungal communities on the surface of household towels belonged to 5 phyla, 18 classes, 47 orders, 111 families, 177 genera, and 256 species. The dominant phyla were Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, while the dominant genera included Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Stachybotrys. Both PCoA and PerMANOVA analyses indicated that coastal and inland environments significantly influenced the fungal community structure of household towels. Additionally, the average α-diversity index of inland samples (IA) was higher than that of coastal samples (CA). The dbRDA analysis indicated that the relative abundance of fungi such as Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Chaetomium was positively correlated with local temperature and humidity. Moreover, these high-abundance fungi played a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the fungal communities on towel surfaces. FunGuild functional prediction indicated that the trophic composition of fungal communities on household towel surfaces was saprotroph. This study provides a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of fungal contamination in household towels. |
